To become a barista at home, one needs the right tools at a workable budget to create those laudable drinks that can be ordered at a coffeehouse.
And acquiring these new kitchen skills is a good of a time as any.
The New York Times reported that due to rising cost of importing beans, severe weather damaging crops in Brazil-which is the world’s largest java exporter- the price of one’s coffee habit is going to increase.
Starbucks recently raised its prices and this isn’t the first time it has done so. It rose them in October then again in January. In 2021, the cost of a grande latte without flavoring was $3.65. That’s $1,332 per year that could go towards goals that requires saving for such as, traveling or remodeling a home.
Learning to make Americanos, lattes, and cold brew isn’t time consuming and visiting a café isn’t inherently bad if purchasing a cup of joe doesn’t affect someone’s ability save. But Americans are buying more coffee than ever.
According to the National Coffee Association USA (NCA), since 2015 coffee drinking is up by 5% and espresso beverages are starting to gain popularity. 60% of java that is drank in the United States is considered “gourmet.”
What do you need to make a gourmet beverage? Interesting question… Someone will need a:
Grinder:
Which is the most important aspect of making café style drinks. The type of grind affects the taste and quality of a beverage someone is making. Grind coffee beans extremely fine the drink will be strong and harsh. Too coarse, it’ll be weak and lacking in flavor. The preferable manner of grinding beans is the use of a burr grinder. The resulting grind is even and yields consistent taste. This is expensive. The cheaper option is a blade grinder, but it’s inconsistent. Purchasing a blade grinder is great step in learning what it takes to make specialty beverages.
Coffee Beans:
Utilizing beans instead of ground coffee elevates the flavor of the overall drink. For example, an Americano is shots of espresso mixed with hot water. It typically doesn’t have any additions such as flavoring, only half and half. It’s the one espresso-based drink that the flavor of the beans stands out. Which is why finding a quality brand of coffee beans that one is willing to purchase continually is imperative. It’s alright to experiment and buy different types of roasts. It’s about determining what tastes good to the barista.
Method:
There are multiple ways to make a cup of joe from a pour over, moka pot, french press, and Aeropress. Find what fits in the budget and is reliable. Buy a coffee maker that corresponds to one’s lifestyle and is fun to work with. Becoming a barista is a process that should be enjoyable and encourages just by the method alone to minimize going out to buy coffee.
